Use the element tools without losing track of what is selected.

Choose the element you need and add it to the selected section. Avoid adding items just to fill space.
Drag items to rearrange them and look for the highlighted item to see what you're changing.
Delete only the selected element. If you remove the wrong thing, use Undo immediately.
